| Arrangements in White The white backgrounds of my recent collages perform the same function as the hypnotic patterns I have used previously. In addition to "looking like drawings" on white paper, the whiteness disintegrates spatial boundaries and normal perspective, making a space to float in or swim in. I am inspired by the conflation/compression of interior and exterior. The space I create in my work can become even more ambiguous, and can point to other dimensions - theater sets, cinema, storyboards, animation cels. Sometimes I do actually build them. I will happily channel outmoded (even frumpy) traditional craft media. Sometimes I feel like I'm "quilting" color field paintings with a child's art medium. I am always re-visiting my 1970s visual and cultural imprint. The female figure posing or gesticulating in this work is not really the star of any soap opera. She is a picture, a stylized symbol of a self, an everygirl. I'm interested in designating her physical size, color, bodily position and gesture, her costume, her props. Some of the images in this work are derived from the hypnosis I feel whooshing past painted warehouses in my car in Miami. Their faintly deco-inspired speed lines and crisp color relationships tweak some fundamental aethetic nerve in my being, and open up limitless mental possibilities. As always, I try to deliver grand decoration using economic means. -- mwpinkblue@aol.com http://home.earthlink.net/~mwpinkblue |
