Paul Lee is an artist who lives and works in NYC. He studied sculpture at
Winchester School of Art in England and 'started again when he left' He makes small works on paper and canvas, takes photo's and makes books and video's. He says "I want to get a show in New York but theyre only interested in slides" For this show he is exhibiting 13 photo's of birds. The birds were found dead on the sidewalk alongside the Central Sorting Office Manhattan on W28th St. They fly into the black glass of the office windows as it vividly reflects the sky. The photos in this exhibition are selected from dozens taken mostly on my walks to and from work. I have always taken pictures alongside Painting and Drawing; this is my first time exhibiting them."
"Lee refers to the camera as Cyclops, the one-eyed monster who eats human
flesh, because of the way the camera consumes people and images in
instantaneous gulps."
The above quote is taken from an article written by Laura McNeal about the show at the Chesea Hotel. Now I have this exhibition of dead birds and I was thinking that the Cyclops could not eat the birds because it cant digest the feathers, they have been discarded, and I was wondering if in fact that a photograph could only portray dead things.
