|
The White Line or American printmaking process was developed in Provincetown and taught directly to Ms. Smith by one of its originators, her grandmother, Ferol Warthen. Hers is the only medium of print using only one block of wood for the process, rather than one for each color as in traditional Japanese and German methods of woodblock printing. The process involves the painstaking, time-consuming carving of a block of wood, often pine. Paint is applied to the wood, one color at a time and transferred to the paper. Ms. Smiths work is elegant and complex; her use of color smartly supports the works placement in a variety of living or workspaces. Also on view will be works by Barbara Cohen, Polly Burnell, Amy Kandall, Sal Randolph, Liz Carney, Doug Padgett, and David Mamo. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday from Noon until 5 p.m. (8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday).
