| Mike Carroll lives and works in Provincetown, MA where he is a painter, curator and frequent contributor/ collaborator to arts related organizations and events in the area. Mr. Carroll writes and speaks on art and exhibition spaces. I take wood and apply hand made gesso, then sand it and touch it for a long time in order to consider what a perfect surface might be. Then I start applying an image. Lots of times these are based on pattern, repetition or some concept, idea or other art. But I know they will only ever be embedded under the final picture. I am wasting my time, but not. At this stage its nice that Im giving it my full attention, and at the same time its not that important. It might never be seen. Parts of it may, but mostly I just need something to work with. After this part a relationship with the piece starts which is interactive with my daily life if I am honest about it. All the ways that I can be need to become marks, gestures, edges or the lack of them. Everything gets used or at least tried. I want the work to have meaning, but through form and color, tone and content. I am not interested in convincing people about anything, but want to represent situations and their possibilities. I work mostly with oil paint, pen, pencil and some collage. Mostly it takes a year or two to get something I'm satisfied with, but sometimes things happen more quickly. I'm trying to get something that's right for right now - that's personal for me and generous to other people. -MC Contact: Mike Carroll 508.487.7455 Mikecarroll2302@earthlink.net m |
