NARROWLAND ARTS
PRESENTS

MAGGIE BARRETT’S “GIVE IT UP”

AN EVOLVING PRODUCTION FEATURING A REVOLVING CAST THAT INCLUDES MAGGIE BARRETT, JEAN BATES, JUDITH ISRAEL, MARY CHRIS KENNEY, AND PHILIPPA COOPER

Narrowland Arts continues its commitment to theatre and art on the edge of tradition by producing Maggie Barrett’s two-act, three character play “Give it Up”. What’s unique about the staging of this production is that at any given performance you may see the play as a one-woman show or as an ensemble piece featuring three actresses. Also, the five actresses involvd form a rotating cast so that by the end of the season each character will have been interpreted by 3 different actresses. A panel discussion will follow the final performance. Audiences are rarely ever given to the opportunity to see a play that evolves in such a way and offers a new vision of the same powerful piece of theatre on any given evening.

“Give It Up” follows the main character Sam, who, as an adoptee, has experienced ‘not belonging’ all her life. Now, as she awaits the birth of her first grandchild, she re-evaluates the meaning of belonging, the nature of loss, the ties of flesh and blood and how the need to know where and who we come from affects our lives. We also meet Sybil, Sam’s ninety year-old adoptive mother who tells us her story from a nursing home in England and May, an Irish nurse and Sam’s biological mother who Sam has never met. May tells us her story from a bomb shelter in London at the end of WWII where she conceived Sam with a perfect stranger.

The production opens on August 3 and runs twelve performances in August and September with a revolving cast. Ms. Barrett, an accomplished dancer, writer and actress, has performed “Give It Up” in Provincetown both with The Provincetown Repertory Theatre Company and The Provincetown Theatre Company and in New York at The Neighborhood Playhouse. Maggie Barrett was a finalist for both for the Chesterfield Film Writing Award and The National Play Award, and is the Founding Director of The Tuscany Workshops where she and husband Joel Meyerowitz teach writing and photography every summer. Maggie holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Vermont College.

The “Give It Up” cast also includes Jean Bates, Judith Israel, Mary Chris Kenney, and Philippa Cooper. Jean Bates who plays Sybil is one of the Cape’s most delightful actresses whose sharp wit and command of the English language continues to delight audiences from Chatham to Provincetown. Mary Chris Kenney, who plays May as well as all three roles in solo performance, is an accomplished and celebrated actress who is known in Boston and on the Cape for her versatility and dynamic stage presence. Judith Israel, who plays Sam is a versatile actress who has appeared in many starring roles on Cape Cod. Philippa Cooper, who hails from England especially for this production, has worked extensively in television and has made one feature film. She is currently studying drama at the City Lit, Covent Garden London where she has appeared in two Shakespeare productions, “Macbeth” and “A Winters Tale”.

Give It Up” runs Saturday, Sunday and Monday August 3,4,5, 10,11,12, 24, 25, 26 and September 15, 16, and 17 in Manso Hall at The Schoolhouse Center for Art and Design, 494 Commercial Street. All shows are at 8PM.
