| "Bob Dylan" - Rowland Scherman |
|
Driskel Vintage Photography at the Schoolhouse Center for Art and Design in Provincetown, MA is proud to present an exhibition of photographs by Rowland Scherman.
Rowland Sherman's compelling images capture important popular entertainers from the 1960s and 70s, the icons of the folk and rock music worlds, actors and young revolutionary politicos. All find their way into Schermans extensive oeuvre. Bob Dylan and Joan Baez onstage at the Newport Music Festival in 1962 with Peter, Paul and Mary and Pete Seeger; the Beatles at their first U. S. gig in Washington, D. C. in 1964; Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins in a treehouse in Topanga Canyon in 1969; Janis Joplin and Grace Slick at Woodstock. These defining moments in pop culture are recorded along with Schermans portraits of Jim Morrison of the Doors, Abbie Hoffman decked out in a stars-and-stripes shirt sporting a George Wallace for President button, and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, captured in a brilliant cherry- red image. Perhaps Schermans best known work is his blue, silhouetted Bob Dylan album cover , for which Scherman won the Grammy in 1968.
The Schoolhouse Center is located at 494 Commercial Street in Provincetown's historic East End Gallery District. The Galleries are open daily from 11 and always by appointment. For more information please call Larry Collins at (508) 487.4800. |
