Driskel Vintage Photography
May 24- June 12, 2002
Opening Reception: Friday, May 24, 6-9 p.m.
The Driskel Vintage Photography Gallery at the Schoolhouse Center for Art and
Design in Provincetown, MA presents a third selection of vintage photographs from this seasons collection. Highlighting this selection are profound images by Manuel Alvarez Bravo, arguably Mexicos most important 20th century photographer. A vintage print of a reclining female nude, recalling one of Bravos most famous motifs, and his shocking Striking Worker, Assassinated, 1934, lead a compelling group of images by Latin American photographers. These include Hugo Brehme, Tina Modotti and Valdir Cruz, who is represented by a large, breathtaking silver print of a waterfall in Brazil, the lone contemporary artist in this group.
Other works of interest are early vintage prints of Greenwich Village by Jesse Tarbox Beal, an exquisite 1940s outdoor moonscape with a figure by Minor White, a rare 19th century photographic herbarium album containing over 300 vintage printing-out-paper prints. Collectors of anonymous images will find all manner of exotica in the photo library, from a giant eyeball reminiscent of Salvador Dalis and Luis Bunels notorious 1928 Surrealist film,Un Chien Andalou, to a rogues gallery of police mugshots--all for sale.
The Schoolhouse Center is located at 494 Commercial Street in Provincetown's historic East End Gallery District. The Galleries are open daily from 11 and always by appointment. For more information please call Larry Collins at (508) 487.4800.
