July 12- July 24, 2002

Opening Reception: Friday, July 12, 7-10 p.m.

Driskel Vintage Photography at the Schoolhouse Center for Art and Design in Provincetown, MA presents a collection of beautiful vintage nineteenth-century photographic studies of clouds. They were originally taken for a meteorological institute in Berlin, visual documents illustrating the various types of cloud formations: cumulus, cirrus, stratus, nimbus and all conceivable combinations and variations. The photographer, Dr. Richard Neuhauss of Berlin, is also the creator of another important archive of aerial photography, a series of early flying machines with their pilots.

Seeing these scientific photographs from the distance of more than a century in time, it is tempting to relate to them primarily through the experience of twentieth-century art. Expressive abstractions such as Steiglitz’s “Equivalents” series of clouds photographs are provocative analogies to these earlier technical photographs, now reborn as art objects.

The Schoolhouse Center is located at 494 Commercial Street in Provincetown's historic East End Gallery District. The Galleries are open daily from 11 and always by appointment. For more information please call Larry Collins at (508) 487.4800.
