Driskel Vintage Photography at the Schoolhouse Center for Art and Design in Provincetown, MA is proud to present the first solo exhibition ever to be held in the United States of photographs by legendary Argentine photographer
Annemarie Heinrich. Heinrichs’s work has been exhibited throughout the world and she has been honored with countless awards. Emigrating to Argentina as a child in 1926, by eighteen she had set up her own photography studio, with lights made from kerosene cans by her father. She eventually became sought after for extraordinary artistic abilities, creating stunning portraits sculpted with a light so lucid they often seem more like sculptures of marble and porcelain than of flesh and blood. Through intense handworking on the negatives in some instances, toning, and perfection of printing technique, her pristine work rivals the best of the great Hollywood photographers such as George Hurrell and Lazlo Willinger. Sometimes she achieves an other-worldly Surrealist aura that places her work in the mainstream of great 20th-century Latin American photography. Countless famous faces and figures from the worlds of the theatre and ballet, artists, writers, musicians, film stars and political figures have been photographed by this renowned artist. Included in this exhibition are vintage and contemporary prints from the 1930’s and 40s. Ramon Navarro, Eva Peron, Marian Anderson, Richard Wright, Carmen Miranda, and Jorge Luis Borges among many others are presented with flawless beauty and style.
