Henny Garfunkel also photographs the pursuit of pleasure; this past 4-of-July weekend on a cruise ship in Provincetown harbor, she was the lone woman in a group of over 1,000 gay men who had gathered from all over the country for a “circuit” party- bacchanals where the quest for the “perfect” hairless and muscled body is superseded only by the paradoxical desire to lose oneself in a heady mixture of music and dancing.

Garfunkel’s stance is both confrontational and fragmented; she crops body parts to emphasize their exaggerated size. In these images the photographers curiosity and fascination is clearly felt... the pictures teeter uneasily between the erotic and the grotesque. In one memorable image, a young handsome man poses for the
camera, obviously proud of his rock hard torso, with a broad smile which reveals two rows of gleaming braces on his teeth. It is an image both humorous , touching and thought-provoking...no matter how self-consciously we alter the body into armour or art, the photographs make apparent our vulnerabilty as human beings .

The Schoolhouse Center is pleased to announce our Third Annual Grand
Opening Party on Friday, June 2, 2000 from 6-10 p.m. We will present an evening of special exhibitions, events, food, and drink to welcome the Summer Arts Season.

The Driskel Gallery presents two exhibitions of photographs of film stars and other celebrities. These exhibitions will coincide with the Provincetown International Film Festival and kick off the Schoolhouse Center's third season.

In her first solo exhibition, Henny Garfunkel shows sparkling images in black and white of film stars including Johnny Depp, Antonio Banderas, Riki Lake and brooke shields. these well known personalities are paired with iconic characters from the streets, whose larger than life personas are equally matched. Humor and pop culture analogies saturate this entire group of incisive portraits.

Garfunkel has distinguished herself in editorial and publicity work for Paper, Elle, In Style, and Entertainment Weekly. She has recorded the famous faces at the Sundance, Toronto and Cannes Film Festivals and has been still photographer on the set of several films, including John Waters' Hairspray and Crybaby, and Todd Solondz's Happiness.
