The Driskel Gallery at the Schoolhouse Center is proud to present the recent
altered x-rays of photographer Deirdre Portnoy. Portnoy sees the abstract beauty in the entrails and internal organs of biological specimens of mammals, fish and birds, as well as x-rays of their delicate wings, skeletons and skulls. Meticulously enlarging, cropping and toning these images photographically, she creates images that appear like aerial photographs and microscopic details simultaneously, swirling ephemeral ribbons of light and shade, unwinding into deep space. These are mystical works of art created out of the cast-off and out-dated tools of science and medicine. What some might see as repugnent and morbid, Portnoy transforms into images of beauty and mystery.
