ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

The Schoolhouse Center is pleased to announce the initiation of our exciting new Residency Program for 1999. In keeping with our goal to encourage and promote the arts on the Lower Cape, Executive Director David Davis and Managing Director Michael Carroll have initiated an Artist In Residence Program. The program runs from July 1 through September 15, 1999, and is a companion to The Driskel Studio Residency Programs, which provide studio space for artists and young artists four times each year. The Schoolhouse Center Artist In Residence for 1999 is poet Eileen Myles.

Myles is a "pure product" of New York's East Village art scene. She gave her first reading at CBGB's, worked in the late 70's as assistant to the poet and art writer, James Schuyler, and from 1984 - 86 was the Artistic Director of St. Mark's Poetry Project. Poet, novelist, lesbian culture hero and one-time presidential candidate, "she is the most immediate of poets, transforming the aesthetics of New York School poetry into the culture at large."

Myles is also a Mass. native. Having grown up in Arlington, Mass., she began living part time in Provincetown in 1997, the same year she published School of Fish, which won a Lambda book award in Poetry. Her previous books include Maxfield Parrish, Not Me, and a collection of stories, Chelsea Girls, (1994) which has become sort of a cult classic. Myles is a stunning performer of her poems and stories, and has brought her words to venues as disparate as MOMA, Stanford, ICA, Lezbopalooza and DIA, as well as touring Germany, Russia, Iceland and notoriously with Sister Spit, San Francisco's all-girl spoken mic. In 1995, Myles co-edited The New Fuck You/adventures in lesbian reading (Semiotext(e).). Her articles and reviews have appeared in The Nation, The Village Voice, Civilization, Art In America, Out and The Stranger. Most recently she won a New York Foundation for the Arts grant in Poetry, and just completed her first novel, Cool for You.
