IN THE GALLERIES: In the front gallery a group show of gallery artists including work from Ramon Alcolea, Tim Arnold, Vivian Bower, Alexis Doshas, Jennifer Amadeo-Holl, Jenny Humphreys, Amy Kandall and William Hamlin.
In the back a presentation of the acclaimed 'STORIES' exhibition from Tony Mendoza.
STORIES is a continuing body of photographic images with text that were first compiled for a book of the same name. The exhibition is a series of single and groups of images that are presented with text underneath the pictures, as part of the final artwork. The text drives the images in a buoyant and lively way, often subscribing to the magical realism of his Latin heritage. Mendoza writes directly from the center of his experience, whether it is his decision to live life as an artist, his relationships, travels or family life. In STORIES Mendoza uses beautiful images that are personal yet also have the quality of being a shared secret, a blown up snapshot from a scrapbook of lost moments brought to life again. Mendoza's final images combine expert photographic skills with the astute observations found in the text. His writing is masculine yet warm and accessible, counter-academic but smart, and offers a winning combination of humor and accuracy. The results present a rare opportunity to be inside what we are looking at, to experience content supported by formal strength as an organic system. Rather than being sentimental it is a living, lived experience, one we are happy to try on for a time.
Marian Roth MARIAN ROTH
